Edited with an Introduction and Notes by Dale Kramer
Hardy's classic novel about one man's rise and tragic fall
Thomas Hardy spent much of his youth in the richly historical town of Dorchester, and it is to these familiar surroundings that he turns for the setting of The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886).
Michael Henchard-the mayor of Casterbridge-is Hardy's most traditional tragic hero. Through an impulsive act of selfishness and cruelty he brings himself to ruin, but his essential honesty and acceptance of blame leave the reader feeling more sympathy than condemnation. The background of the novel is the day-to-day activity of the town, dominated by the risks and rewards of ambition and speculation, and by the disruptions of love, jealousy, and revenge.
This edition is the first critically established text of The Mayor of Casterbridge, based on a detailed study of the manuscript and of Hardy's revised printed versions.
