The Murmur of Stones - Thomas H. Cook

It's not very often that I find I can't put down a book; that I'm so drawn into the story I'm practically living it myself. So when I find that rare gem, it's like a gift. This is one such book. It's finely crafted, beautifully written, and has a tension that coils its way through the story like a spring that could be released at any moment. You are bound by its intelligence, its sharp dialogue, and its subject matter.

Jason, a child whose diagnosis ranged from autism to Asperger's and finally to schizophrenia, drowned in an old, deep pond at his parents house when his mother had gone to town and his father was indoors working. Diana, his mother, is bereft. Her closeness to her son and her understanding of his disorder is such that she believes he heard voices, or was 'directed' to walk into the water. But, by whom? His father? The voices?

Dianna's own father was intensely paranoid schizophrenic, hating and loving his children in turn, making lists of his enemies, firing off letters to papers. In this chaos, she and her brother, David, were tossed between the fine line of genius and madness. The "Old Man" finally died while in Dianna's care, but not without a shadow of doubt as to the cause of his death.

Dianna's desperate search for evidence that her ex-husband, Mark, murdered their son becomes obsessive. We are drawn into her brilliant and intense deductions, into her extreme research of what exactly the "voices" are. How easy it is to hear the 'murmur of stones'.

The whole story takes place within three hours - slipping easily from the present to the past in the form of an interview. Dave is telling the story as he is being interviewed, of his family, of Diana's son's death, of her deep and dark suspicions, of his own suspicions, and, like a spider spinning its web there is no escape. How can you draw the line between intuition and madness?
