If you like comedy mixed with your pop-punk and Mr. T. Experience and the Dickies albums are a bit too academic for your taste, you may consider dumbing down your music collection with the Naked Apes. While it would be unfair to dismiss a band's musical ability just because their brand of humor is too juvenile, the lyrics here are so sophomoric that it's really hard to get past the overabundance of beer-goggle jokes and spoon-fed sexual innuendos. Where a band like the Bloodhound Gang(who also rely on potty humor) can also be clever at times, Mikey McCleary's predictably bratty one-liners on Something in my Genes are unworthy of repeated listens. The album's highest level of wit is measured with "If You See Kay," which, of course, sounds like the spelling of a naughty curse word, and also includes a line about the main character putting a vibrating cell phone down her pants. However, if you find shock-value humor (that isn't terribly shocking) funny and you crave polished California-style summertime pop-punk like blink-182, and lyrical gags that are more blatant than, say, Fountains of Wayne, this may be a fun album after a few keg-stands.
