The essay which follows is the first attempt that has yet been made to present a survey of the native policy of those farmers who left the Cape Colony in 1836 and organized themselves into independent states in the interior of South Africa. The Great Trek is a phenomenon that coloured the whole course of the century, and both emigrant farmers and their enemies are agreed that it was bound up with questions of native policy from the very start. Vague feelings of discontent still rankle in connection with these dead and gone disputes, and can be exorcised only by examination in the light of day. The period closes with the acceptance of the first Constitution or Grondwet by the South African Republic in 1858.
