An interesting early analysis of South African mammals by the then director of the Port Elizabeth Museum. Fitzsimons was also the author of a very popular and entertaining guide on South African snakes.

All volumes are clean and square with a small former owner's rubber stamp on the front end papers and title pages. Bindings solid. Illustrations in profusion.

Volume I (1919): The Vervet Monkeys, Baboons, Galagos, Fruit Bats, Insectivorous Bats, Lions, Leopards, Serval Cats, Black-Footed Cats, African Wild Cats, Caracals, and Hunting Leopards. 

Volume II (1919): Civets, Genets, Mungooses, Meerkats, Earth Wolves, Hyaenas, Jackals, Foxes, Wild Dogs, Otters, Honey Ratels, Muishonds, and Sea Lions.
