The Neglected tradition: Towards a new history of South African art (1930-1988)
Johannesburg Art Gallery

by Steven Sack (guest curator)

The Neglected Tradition was a ground breaking exhibition held at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in late 1988 and early 1989. For the first time in South Africa, the work of nearly 100 black South African artists was presented in an exhibition hosted by an art museum. Hailed as a turning point in South African art history, this catalogue critically exposes and considers the art of black South African operating in a Western fine art tradition. The catalogue contains an historical overview by Steven Sack, biographies of each artist included in the exhibition compiled by Lesley Spiro, and an extensive bibliography itemising publications, newspaper articles and relevant research material compiled by Brendan Bell

The catalogue is in general fair to good condition. The cover is worn and scuffed. The edges and corners are thumbed. The spine is intact but has a small mark on the front. The covers and spine are secure and firm. The paper trims have handling marks. The pages are clean and bright, the colour illustrations (8 pages) are vibrant, and the b/w illustrations are rich and clear.

An inspiring and fascinating catalogue in its specific genre. A true investment of a very scarce catalogue.
