Authorized by US Congress and issued by the U.S. Mint, Commemorative Gold Medals honor significant historical events and those persons whose superior deeds and achievements have enriched the World, and are presented to the organizations/ individuals in question for their notable & selfless achievements, in this instance Ex. President Nelson Mandela. 
 
When legislation permits, bronze replicas of 90% copper & 10% zinc are struck, which are miniatures of the Congressional Commemorative Gold Medals
