Rear Admiral Ronald Arthur Hopwood (1868 - 1949) was referred to as the 'poet laureate' of the Royal Navy by TIME MAGAZINE, January 6, 1941. Hopwood's naval career began in the Victorian navy as a gunnery officer and when he retired in 1919 he had advanced to the rank of Rear Admiral. He published several volumes of poetry, most of which had to do with the service and the sea.
