Sannie Uys is the widow of Japie Krige, famous Springbok, and the mother of the painter Francois, and the writer, Uys.
This is her first book to appear in English. It was only in her mid-fifties that she started writing stories and sketches in Afrikaans. During the past few decades she has written many stories, sketches and radio talks
Some of her stories deal with the life she knew as a child and young girl in the district of Swellendam towards the turn of the century and they all possess a strong flavour of South Africa. Her characters stand out clearly against the wide background of her memory. She has real insight into them and a deep sympathy with them - but she sees them with a kind of relentless objectivity that gives her compassion, in her best stories, a telling force.
Her style is simplicity, directness, terseness itself. Her characters can spring to life in a few brief sentences.
