GOLD CLASSICAL FRAME, 68 MM WIDE
 

The old Pier in Cape Town was built in 1910 and demolished in 1939. It was the social heat of the city in the early part of the twentieth century.  It is now part of the land reclaim foreshore complex. The Pier was a highlight in Cape Town's community life and opened to all races, extremely popular on weekends and public holidays.  It had an open-air small pavilion-type stage where pop-concerts, ballet, light classical music and now and then a brass band performed. 

For the sporting type, during the day, swimming, boating and fishing were the scene of the day.  Many folk, particularly the elderly, used the Pier as a Promenade (a paved public walk) or sat on seats in alcoves to watch the passing parade of contented people.  All for the cost of one penny.

Behind the Pier is part of Table Mountain, Lions Head and Signals Hill with the Cape Town buildings in sight.  The scene is set just before sunset on a cold winters day with some showers of rain.
