Published by  Purnell, 1972, hardcover, illustrated, 175 pages, condition: as new.

"This book is presented as a pageant of South African dress from the time of the early Portuguese explorers up to the end of the 19th Century. Most of the illustrations have been taken from drawings and photographs showing the people of the period against a South African background. Others are based on actual costumes displayed or stored in museums. Historic costume in South Africa naturally followed the fashions or Europe, although always a little behind the current trend because of the slow communications of the day. There were modifications of those fashions, however, owing to different local conditions, and sometimes materials. To recapture the spirit of the time, every day objects such as furniture, firearms and transport vehicles have been illustrated along with the costumes.".
