First Edition. Beautifully bound in profuse gilt and full leather by James Hayday. Ornate gilt between raised bands on the spine. Spine also has the title and London, 1846, in gilt. Gilt decoration of a vase on the front and back boards. There are even gilt decorations on the edges of the insides of the boards and on the edges of the boards themselves. The boards are in very good condition: solid with no splits, and the binding is tight. All edges gilt. Two of the leaves are frayed and a blank free endpaper at the back has a chip. Foxing on the outer leaves. Name of Maria Myburgh of Elsenburg, dated 1848, on front free endpaper. The Myburgh family owned the famous farm near Stellenbosch until With biographical memoir and notes.
