An uncommon London phrenological journal. Phrenology, the study of human skulls to determine psychology, was widely considered a reputable science in the 19th century but now is an infamous resident of the great bin of pseudoscience.
Illustrations include sketches, advertisements and photographs throughout. Victorian medicine ushered in advancements such as the use of anesthesia during surgery. It was also a time when Dr. Joseph Lister received significant push back for his stance on hand washing. The science of phrenology (observing or manipulating the skull to gain insight into a patient's personality and psychological state) was one of the oddities of this time in medical history. Now completely discredited, phrenology was never-the-less a respected science in its day. These journals contained directories for consulting a phrenologist of your own, case studies, and parenting tips such as, "If child is afraid of its bath, it is a good plan to put a sheet over the bath so as to conceal the water, and placing the child on the sheet, lower it gently into the water." It is truly Victorian wisdom at its finest.
