This work is an authoritative study of the 82 known species of the genus Protea occurring in Southern Africa south of the Limpopo River. Each species is described in full scientific detail with additional information on distribution, habitat and cultivation.
An introductory chapter describes the discovery and history of proteas from 1597 to 1980. Complementing Dr John Rourkes authoritative text are approximately 90 colour plates with most proteas illustrated to life size, principally by a leading South African botanical artist, Fay Anderson. The historical section includes reproductions of proteas cultivated in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.
This book is the culmination of many years of study by past and present botanists and artists. It represents a valuable contribution to our appreciation of nature as well as being a source of pure scientific information of great interest to all who are concerned with the preservation of our flora.
