The Rape of Lucrece - William Shakespeare
One of three longer poems by Shakespeare, "The Rape of Lucrece," first published in 1594, tells the
story of the legendary Roman figure, Lucretia, who was raped by the son of the king of Rome. Her
subsequent suicide incited a revolt against the royal family and led to the founding of the Roman
republic. Through her suicide, she became one of the greatest political symbols in history.
