Born in Grahamstown, north of Port Elizabeth, in 1843, Finaughty left home at 21 in the employ of traders destined for Matabeleland. It was during this period that he learned something of the business of shooting elephant. In 1867 he struck out by himself and, until the middle of the 1870s, shot over 500 elephants.
