THE RED BOY (MASTER LAMBTON) VINTAGE FRAMED LITHOGRAPH PRINT OF A THOMAS LAWRENCE 1825 PAINTING

THE RED BOY BY THOMAS LAWRENCE 1970S LITHOGRAPH PRINT MOUNTED ON A TRUE WOODEN BASE WITH GOLD AND RED VELVET LINT ON THE SIDES.

The Red Boy or as it was originally known Master Lambton is a famed work by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) and depicts a young Charles William Lambton, who was to be the future Earl of Durham. The original picture was painted in 1825 just six years before the premature death of young Master Lambton from tuberculosis.

Charles Lambton is clad in a crimson velvet suit and is seated outdoors at night, on a rocky headland overlooking the sea. Hes informally posed, with a bent arm and wandering gaze.

The original picture cost 600 guineas to commission which is the rough equivalent of £46,000 in current-day value and was initially displayed at the Royal Academy when first completed. In July 2021 the National Gallery in London purchased the original painting for £9.3 million from a private collection.

THOMAS LAWRENCE (1769-1830):
Thomas Lawrence (the painter of The Red Boy, Miss Murray and Pinkie) was one of the most popular portrait artists of his day and a favorite of the royal courts. He worked constantly and consistently, but to the puzzlement of those around him, was always in debt. Throughout his career he continually relied on financial support from benefactors and loans from his friends and left little fortune when he died.

THE RED BOY (MASTER LAMBTON):
The Red Boy, or Master Lambton, are popular names for a portrait made in 1825 by Sir Thomas Lawrence. It is officially entitled with the name of its subject, Charles William Lambton, who was the elder son of John Lambton.
This portrait is of Charles William Lambton aged six or seven was commissioned by the boys father John George Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, a Whig politician and MP for County Durham. Popularly known as The Red Boy, it remained in the Lambton family until it was acquired by the National Gallery in 2021. It is acknowledged as one of Thomas Lawrences masterpieces and, a sign of the images enduring popularity, it was the first painting to be reproduced on a British postage stamp in 1967. Sitting on a promontory overlooking a moonlit sea, Lawrence portrays Lambton as a child wanderer, lost in contemplation of the sublime power of nature. The flowers opening next to him symbolise his young age. He is at the beginning of his journey through life, though this was cut short he died of tuberculosis aged only thirteen.
