The term "red squad" refers to a unit of police officers who were controversial for their use of force and equipment during the 1981 anti-Springbok rugby tour protests in New Zealand. The Springboks, the South African national rugby team, were touring the country at a time when there was significant opposition to apartheid and the tour itself, with the Red Squad tasked with managing the large-scale protests and maintaining public order. Ross Meurant, a senior member of the Red Squad, later discussed his involvement and the intense division the tour caused.
