Additional Information
The Rhodesia Regiment holds a storied history, spanning from the Boer War to the Rhodesian Bush War.
The Rhodesia Regiment was established in 1899, primarily drawing recruits from Matebeleland. Initially, it functioned as a mounted infantry formation, with many members coming from the Southern Rhodesian Volunteers.
During the Second Boer War, the regiment played a crucial role and was subsequently disbanded in 1900 after the relief of Mafeking.
World War I:
In October 1914, the 1st Rhodesia Regiment was formed, consisting of 20 officers and 500 soldiers. It participated in the South West Africa Campaign under General Louis Botha.
Simultaneously, the 2nd Rhodesia Regiment was created and sent to British East Africa. The 1st Regiment disbanded in July 1915, with many men joining the 2nd Regiment, which included African scouts.
Frederick Selous, after whom the Selous Scouts were named, praised the Rhodesia Regiments performance at Taveta. However, like other white regiments, they faced significant casualties due to malaria and dysentery.
The 2nd Rhodesia Regiment returned home in April 1917 and disbanded in October.
The regiments service in World War II earned it the prestigious title of Royal Rhodesia Regiment in 1947, bestowed by King George VI.
When Rhodesia became a republic in 1970, the regiments title reverted to Rhodesia Regiment, with Queen Elizabeth II resigning her position as Colonel-in-Chief.
The Rhodesia Regiment served on the side of the United Kingdom in the First and Second World Wars and later defended the Republic of Rhodesia during the Rhodesian Bush War.
