The Romany Rye: A Sequel to "Lavengro" by George Borrow
Published by Ward, Lock & Co. Ltd., London (early 20th century edition, c.19001920).
A classic of English travel literature and semi-autobiographical fiction, The Romany Rye continues George Borrow's celebrated Lavengro, exploring his encounters with Romani culture, language, and rural England. Rich in linguistic curiosity, folklore, and philosophical reflection, Borrow's work remains an important contribution to 19th-century literature and early ethnographic writing.
This Ward, Lock edition features a handsome dark green cloth binding with gilt titling and decorative spine borders, typical of early 20th-century trade bindings. The Romany Rye retains its original dark green endpapers and is complete with frontispiece illustration. A solid and attractive shelf copy of a sought-after Borrow title, appealing to collectors of travel writing, Romani studies, and Victorian literature.
Condition - Very Good
Green cloth boards show light general wear with minor bumping to corners and head of spine. Binding remains very good and firm. Original dark green endpapers intact. A 2cm tear to the frontispiece page margin. Foxing present throughout, more noticeable on prelims and page edges. Overall a solid, well-preserved copy for its age.
