The Scallop: Studies of a shell and its influences on humankind

Published by Shell, 1957, hardcover,  illustrated, 135 pages, red cloth boards decoratively stamped in gilt on the spine and upper board, 22 cms x 28.7 cms, inscription to blank page otherwise condition: as new.

This was commissioned by Shell in 1957 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the Shell Transport and Trading Company in 1957.
We see artworks ranging from still-life to Venus which feature scallop-shaped shells. There is a section on scallops in heraldry and coats of arms. Also in carvings and other sculpture.

I thought the colourful illustrations were excellent and this might be liked by a natural history museum or for a study project.
Eight authors contributed.
It was fun to read about the references to scallops in history and art. The cover is beautiful as are the photos inside. I appreciate the effort these authors put into such a niche topic.
