"This is the story of a long and adventurous life. It begins at the turn of the century, and describes the lonely existence on New Zealand sheep stations and the thrills of exploration among the mountains and forests of that sparsely populated land. Then the narrative moves to South Africa and the riots and anarchy on the Reef in 1913-14; to America under the Volstead Act, when the gangsters fought it out in the streets of Chicago, and to Australia where the author helped to found the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in the infant Canberra in 1927', amongst much else in several other countries.
