The Seed and the Sower - Laurens van der Post - 1963 - 1st Edition - The Hogarth Press, London - 250p - Hardcover and dustcover show some wear - Slight foxing - Internally clean and tightly bound.

The Seed and the Sower consists of three stories closely related to one another, and each of them is chiefly concerned with the experience in war of the same English soldier, John Lawrence.

The first story, A Bar of Shadows, hardly needs introduction. It was published separately and received everywhere as one of the most significant stories of our time. It has been translated into most languages, including Japanese.

The second and longest story, which gives this trilogy its name, carries the theme begun in A Bar of Shadows as far, perhaps, as human imagination can carry it.

The last story, The sword and the Doll, tells how in the midst of unparalleled defeat and disaster, a truth comes to light which transcends the experience of war.

All three stories have something of England and Japan in them, and a great deal of Africa and Java. They carry the reader forward to a kinship of heart and mind wherein all man could be reconciled.
