This book is an attempt to record some of the exploits of African treasure-hunters. Thirty years spent at the heart of African affairs has enabled me to see something of that Pageant of Adventure which I have attempted to describe; and the experience has resulted in some acquaintance, too, with the chief characters in that Pageant, with the men of Science, the strange visionaries, the volatile spirits, who virtually dedicated their lives to the hunt for African treasure.
