Rian Malan, a member of one of Afrikanerdom's oldest families, was born in Vereeniging in 1954. Educated at Woodmead High, he joined The Star and became their crime reporter. In 1977 he left the country for America. He returned from exile in 1986 and resumed work as a crime reporter. He went on to write the internationally acclaimed My Traitor's Heart. He now writes for leading magazines around the globe and is currently researching a book on tribalism.
