First edition hardcover with embossed blue cloth boards, as issued, published by Nelson, London. In 1916 the Union Government commissioned the author John Buchan to undertake the official history of the South African forces in Europe. At the time he was serving in France and undertook the work after the signing of the Armistice. 404 pages including seven appendices, dealing with Western Egypt, Delville Wood, Arras, Ypres, The Somme Retreat, Lys, The Advance to Victory etc... the appendices yielding important information on The Heavy Artillery, The South African Signal Company, The Medical Services, The Railways Companies, The Cape Auxiliary Horse Transport Companies, Victoria Crosses and Honours Won by South Africans. Illustrative with b/w photographs and 22 maps. Excellent condition for its age, the plastic cover photographs very badly is not indicative of the smooth finish of the boards.
