"South Africa's record in international rugby is second to none. The Springboks as they have been known since 1906 when Paul Roos led a pioneering team to Britain, have made their famous green and gold colours respected - and feared- on the rugby fields of Britain, New Zealand, Australia and France. At the end of the 1969-70 British Isles Tour, the Springboks had played 123 test matches and had won 74, lost 36 and drawn 13. It is a notable record.
This is the full story, enlivened by anecdotes and inside facts, of Springbok rugby. It opens in 1891 with the first tour of W.E. Maclagan's British team, complete with long moustaches and even longer knickerbockers. So well did the South Africans absorb the lessons of that tour that within 15 years the pupils were able to compete overseas with their teachers on more than equal terms.
The chief actors in this story are the great Springboks themselves, past and present - from Barry Heatlie to Dawie de Villiers. The tension and drama of great Test matches are captured and there is a final chapter on the recent 1969-70 tour. A complete statistical section, with numerous specially chosen pictures, makes this the most comprehensive and up-to-date account of South African Rugby yet published."
