Anna is in Sweden when the disaster occurs. Increasingly anxious to understand the truth in the face of conflicting media reports, she tries to contact her sister Anastasia to  learn the true nature of events. The third sister, Alenka, is working in Chernobyl; and it is intense concern for her well-being which provokes Anastasia’s determination to find her. As she enters the ‘Dead Zone’ of Chernobyl, events and characters become more desperate and bizarre , while Anastasia’s mission assumes tragic proportions.
