The stars say 'tsau' - Antjie Krog - Kwela - 2004 - Paperback in very good condition.

A very special, collectable book of poetry, comprising 35 San poems and 8 full-colour drawings and watercolours. Designed by Jrgen Fomm.

This collection consists of narratives by five different San (Bushmen) ‘word artists’ recorded in the late 19th century, when it was clear that the language and culture of the !Xam of the Northern Cape was under serious threat of extinction.

Deep under the impression of the value of the vanishing culture, the German philologist Wilhelm Bleek and his English sister-in-law Lucy Lloyd studied the language and oral literature of a group of /Xam prisoners incarcerated in the Breakwater Prison in Cape Town. The authorities allowed Bleek the opporunity to have the prisoners live at his house, and over five years their narratives as well as that of some members of their families were meticulously recorded and studied at the Bleek house in Mowbray. Bleek and Lloyd referred to their San informants as ‘givers of the native literature’.

The poems – which poet and writer Antjie Krog carefully reconstructed from the recorded material, staying as true as possible to the original – tell of mythological beings, hunting and the spirits of animals, and sing of loss and longing for the land; they are extraordinarily powerful and evocative.

The charming, vivid visual images were drawn and painted by the !Xam ‘poets’ as well as members of another group of San, the Kun.
