Nieuwelande was established by Adrian van der Stel and the manor house of Newlands was built in 1751 by the Dutch Governor Ryk van Tulbagh. The author and sometime resident of the house was the first woman Mayor of Cape Town and author of Gwelo Goodman and William Rowland Thompson. Interesting visitors and residents are described as well as different historical periods.
