" Although the story that follows was witten by the Information Officer of the Battalion, he has, as far as continuity allowed, included accounts from the men of the Battalion, so that the spirit of the foreword to the intended magazine, written by the Battalion Commander, Lt.-Col. W.R. van der Riet M.C. has, we hope, been maintained. In this foreword he said: " There are none more qualified to wite the histoy of the battalion than those who made that history. Because of this you will not find among these pages pen pictures and sketches by well known authors and War Correspondents, but colourful accounts and anecdotes by those who lived and fought these stories"
The story that follows falls into three unequal parts, viz. the foundation and mobilisation of the Regiment de la Rey and of the Witwatersrand Rifles, the "marriage" and preparation for battle of the WR and DLR, and, finally the WR/DLR in Italy"
