A story of pictures. people and events. and the role that they have played in the development of painting in South Africa. The STORY OF SOUTH AFRICAN PAINTING opens in the 19th Century: as the narrative unfolds, it charts the course of modern South African artistic endeavour. from the descriptive records of the 'Africana painters' to the avant-garde expression of the 1970s. The developments are dealt with in the context of the local circumstances and environment in which they have occurred: but they are also viewed against the wider background of world events and inter-national artistic movements. The sources, aims and character of many different styles and individual works of art are clearly illustrated and lucidly explained. The reproductions - 84 in colour, 166 in black-and-white have been drawn, where possible, from public collections, thereby affording readers opportunity to study the original works in conjunction with the text. Woven into the narrative are concise and clear accounts of the origins and course of noted modern schools and movements. Each artistic term or stylistic label is defined when introduced, and all are given additional purport and precision by means of illustration and comparative example. A comprehensive Index/Glossary concludes the book. The author, Fsme Berman, needs no introduction to the South African public. Her previous volume, ART & ARTISTS OF SOUTH AFRICA, has broken every record for art publications in South Africa and is currently in its Fourth Impression.
