The Succulent Euphorbieae (Southern Africa) Volumes 1 and 2 by Alain White, R. Allen Dyer, and Boyd L. Sloane, published in 1941 by Abbey Garden Press, remains one of the foundational scholarly works on the remarkable succulent members of the Euphorbia family native to Southern Africa.

These two volumes, long regarded as essential references for botanists, collectors, and serious horticultural enthusiasts, provide an authoritative survey of the region's extraordinary diversity of euphorbias at a time when comprehensive taxonomic studies were still in their formative stages. Together, they offer a meticulous synthesis of field research, herbarium study, and expert illustration, making The Succulent Euphorbieae (Southern Africa) a landmark publication in botanical literature.

Across both volumes, the authors present detailed species descriptions that address morphology, habitat, distribution, and diagnostic traits, supported by finely rendered illustrations that capture the structural complexity typical of euphorbias. Their work documents both well-known and obscure taxa, offering an early scientific baseline for many species whose classifications or ranges have since evolved. The clarity and precision of the text reflect the combined expertise of White, Dyer, and Sloane, each of whom played a significant role in shaping 20th-century botanical understanding in Southern Africa.

The 1941 edition is particularly valued for its historical importance, careful scholarship, and production quality, including crisp botanical plates that complement the descriptive text. Collectors prize The Succulent Euphorbieae (Southern Africa) not only for its scientific contribution but also for its enduring aesthetic appeal and its status as a rare, early comprehensive treatment of this distinctive plant group. This two-volume set remains a cornerstone reference for anyone studying or collecting African succulents.

Condition - Very Good

Both volumes are bound in the original brown cloth, with lightly sunned spines. The gilt lettering on the spines has faded with age but remains clearly legible. The bindings are sound and the books present well on the shelf. Internally, both volumes are clean and complete, each bearing a neat previous owner's ink inscription. Overall, a solid and attractive two-volume set showing moderate signs of age and careful use.
