On the third of September, not so long ago, something truly wondrous happened on the Beauford Farm and Estate. At the moment of her death, Imogen Zula Nyoni Genie was seen to fly away on a giant pair of silver wings...." Said to have hatched from a golden egg, Genie spends her childhood playing in a field of sunflowers as her country reawakens after a fierce civil war But Genie's story stretches hack much further, it tells of her grandfather, who quenched his wanderlust by walking into the Indian Ocean, and of her father, who spent countless hours building model acroplanes to catch up with him. It is the tale of her mother, a singer self-styled after Dolly Parton with a dream of travelling to Nashville, and of her grandmother, who did everything in her power to raise her children to have character. With the lightest of touches, a cast of unforgettable characters, and moments of surreal beauty, The Theory of Flight sketches decades of history in this unnamed Southern African nation. It does not dwell on what has been lost in its war, but on the daily triumphs of its people, the necessity of art, and the power of its visionaries to take flight. A dazzling novel of delicate and astonishing magic. The Themy of Flight is a joyful tapestry of characters shaped but never deformed by the tensions of the times they traverse, narrated in pruse of devastatingly beautiful simplicity Tsitsi Dangarembga, author of Nieresans Conditions Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu won the Barry Ronge Fiction Prize with her debut, The Theory of Flight, after which her novels The History of Man and The Quality of Mercy followed. Disclaimer: Bees Books is run by an individual like yourself. I specialise in secondhand books and only stock books in a condition that I would be happy to use myself. While taking care to point out all notable flaws, more flaws may exist, but all books are intact and useable. Clear pictures are provided of the book for your perusal. Flaws are subjective; what is a flaw to some might be character to another. I stock rare vintage and antiquarian books, all of which are in charming vintage condition. Most books contain foxing, which is discolouration of the paper. It happens to all books, even newer books, and is a result of oxidization of mineral byproducts of the paper-making process. I inspect all books for mold, and dispose of all books that contain the slightest trace thereof. The easiest way to detect mold is through the damp/musty smell of a book. My collection includes ex-library books. These books are chosen for their acceptable condition and all of them are purchased from libraries selling discontinued, withdrawn books, benefiting the community library with much-needed funds, and saving the book for more people to enjoy.
