The Things Which Belong tells the story of Mattie, a young woman from a working-class family who is hired as a maid for the wealthy family.  Mattie is intelligent and ambitious, she eventually becomes the governess to the family's children, and she develops a close relationship with them.  The Things Which Belong was a critical and commercial success.  It was praised for its insightful portrayal of the British class system and its sensitive depiction of the love between Mattie and John.
