Scarce work. Translated from the French. An important guide to the training of the memory in art, with a survey of art teaching and details of training memory for form and colour application. Written by Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran, a French artist and teacher who, as a drawing instructor he became known for his innovative method which emphasized memorization. Students were instructed to visit the Louvre, to carefully study a painting in order to reproduce it from memory later, in the studio. This exercise was intended to help the student to discover their own visual language. Translated by Lowes Dalbiac Luard, a British painter. With an introduction by Selwyn Image, a British artist, designer, writer and poet associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement.
In the original blue cloth binding. Externally, sound with bumping and rubbing to the extremities. Firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd handling mark.
