Background Information:

A South African Native, Breytenbach is an internationally celebrated poet, activist, painter and author of numerous novels, short story compilations, essays and dramatic works. A committed opponent of apartheid, Breytenbach moved from South Africa in the early 1960’s to Paris where he became a political activist. In 1975, on a covert visit to South Africa he was arrested and sentenced to seven years of imprisonment for high treason. Breytenbach's memoir of this experience, The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist (1983), is widely recognised as a South African classic and has been translated into more than a dozen languages.
