The TRUTH about the GRIQUA COINAGE of 1815/16

Two of South Africa’s most prominent numismatists, Brian Hern and Peter Wilson (President of the South African Numismatic Society) have been vilified on an overseas website for their support of the enormous relevance of the Griqua coinage to South African numismatics.

This malicious Australian website lists 50 (so called) reasons why the “Griqtown (sic) token coins never circulated” and why they have “no relevance to South African numismatics at all”.

These lies have also been forwarded by the webmaster to respected international coin companies, who in some cases have started to swallow this nonsense.

The rot has started to set in and the truth about a very important part of our numismatic heritage is definitely in danger because of this. I have studied the so-called 50 reasons and have published an e-booklet on my findings, proving these accusations to be nothing but malicious lies and fabrications.

The South African Mint has recently honoured our numismatic history by issuing the commemorative Griqua R5, so there has never been a better time to rectify the lies being spread about the Griqua coinage of 1815/16.
