The Union of South Africa and The Great War 1914-1918
Official History
General Staff, Defence Headquarters, Pretoria, 1924.
R5500

The history of the participation of South African forces in the Great War of 1914-1918. Operations commenced for the purpose of obtaining certain objectives in German South-West Africa. These had suddenly to be suspended and attention diverted to something entirely different - the rebellion within the Union.
An Infantry Brigade was raised and intended to represent the Union in France, but found its way to Egypt. Later, this Brigade returned to France, and was practically annihilated. A Signal Company was sent to France, a Brigade of Field Artillery to Egypt and Palestine, followed by the Cape Corps. Recruiting for the Royal Air Force drew many South Africans.

Eight sections deal with:
1. Military Operations during 1914 - the Rebellion and South-West Africa.
2. German South-West Africa.
3. German East African Campaign.
4. German East African Campaign - Second Phase.
5. The South African Infantry Brigade in Egypt.
6. The South African Infantry Brigade in France.
