The author was an eyewitness of the 1899 political situation in the Cape Colony and Transvaal. Hobson was in Pretoria during the critical negotiations in Bloemfontein between the Republics and Milner. He had personal association with men of prominence in the Republics, Outlanders and in the Colony. For students a useful account by a contemporary of the months leading up to the War and the first months of the War.
