The War Memoirs of Commandant Ludwig Krause, 1899-1900 is a significant historical account of the South African War (Anglo-Boer War). Ludwig Krause, a legal practitioner and member of the Progressive Party who initially believed the war could have been avoided but later fought for the Boer cause.
The memoirs are praised for their clarity, descriptive power, and the author's outspoken opinions on both his British foes and some of his own side's leadership. Krause started the war as an ordinary burgher in Natal and later became an officer in the guerrilla campaign in the Northern Transvaal. He was eventually captured and sent to a prisoner of war camp in India.
