It was at the urging of General Smuts, among many other friends, that in his later years  he decided to recoun t this tale of a vivid and varied career. Infortunately just as he wished to start, his health began to fail and in order to reduce the strain, I was called in. We had many discussions over several years and by degrees his remarkable life story was set down, with its many unusual yarns of a day that has gone and of people who wrote their names in the history of South Africa. As the tale developed I felt more and more that this book would have an appeal to all interested in this country of ours..............
