"The author, a South African, was released from a prison camp in Northern Italy after the armistice of September 1943, and turned loose to find his way to the British lines, between whom and himself lay Kesselring's army. The journey took him several weeks, sometimes with other men, sometimes alone. Often he lay hidden in derelict huts or a wood as the searchers passed by firing at shadows. At times he was very nearly caught as one Italian after another hid him and risked death to put the Germans off the scent. It was an experience that brought him into a close and unusual form of contact with other men of that vast dispersed prison population and with the small Italian peasants who turned out so astonishingly loyal, kind and courageous.."
