A mother depending on her daughters.
Louise is a mother with three daughters who finds herself struggling against the insecurity and uncertainty of old age. Too proud to depend on her friends, too poor to manage on her own, she is dependent on her daughters, who can spare from the complexities of their own lives neither time nor sympathy for her. In awkward embarrassment she lives with them in turn, her self-respect saved only by an understanding and sympathetic grandchild and a few friends. But Louise is finally able to find contentment and a happiness she thought she had lost.
