The Complete Works of François Rabelais, Volume One and Two (two books)

According to the full title, these books give "an account of the inestimable life of the great Gargantua, and of the heroic deeds, sayings and marvellous voyages of his son the good Pantagruel". Rabelais was one of the great writers of the Renaissance, a priest, eminent physician, scholar and diplomat. His comic masterpiece about the giants Gargantua and Pantagruel was to entertain the cultivated reader at the expense of the follies and exaggerations of his times. The tales are adventurous and erudite, festive and gross, ecumenical, and rarely - if ever - solemn for long. With beautifully crafted etchings by Frank C Papé.

Limited edition published 1927. This edition published 1933 in London by John Lane, The Bodley Head, and in New York by Boni and Liveright.

Condition: Both books good for their age. Foxing on some pages. Pages lightly yellowed. Hardcover boards covered by plastic.
