'This little book began as a tribute to Port Elizabeth. I soon realized it needed beefing up. A smattering of tennis - local tennis in the main - was added. Still too flimsy. Extracts from my travel notes were brought in, and later, a teeny bit of the personal.
I have lived in Port Elizabeth for over 70 years. As the years passed, the more clear to me became the realization of what a grand place it it. This is my tribute to a very underestimated City.
I have been fortunate in being involved in Eastern Province Tennis in three capacities - player (1947 - 1954), administrator and as a tennis reporter for both the Herald and the Evening Post. There were several characters who brightened up the game of tennis in my time, and to them and others of this period, I tender this salute.
Travel has always loomed large in my life. When funds and opportunity were there, I was off. These extracts from my notes may hopefully encourage some, more timid than I, to give it a bash.'
Autobiography. Reminiscence. Includes travels in North and South America, Europe, and Africa.
