Book description: Nat Nakasa was born in Durban and settled in Johannesburg to pursue a career in journalism. In 1963 he founded and edited the literary magazine The Classic, which sought to provide a publishing outlet for emerging black writers while promoting the principles of artistic freedom and multiracialism. In 1964 he was awarded a Nieman Fellowship to study journalism at Harvard College in the USA. When his application for a passport was rejected he was forced to leave South Africa on an exit permit. He died after a fall from a highrise building in New York.
