SIGNED, DATED & INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR INCL. HIS PRISON NUMBER, THIRD EDITION, 2002, SOFTCOVER, ILLUSTRATED, 264 PAGES, CONDITION: VERY GOOD.

There & Back is the autobiography of Eddie Daniels, who was born in South Africa, District Six, in 1928. Because of his opposition to apartheid as a member of the Liberal Party of South Africa and the African Resistance Movement, he was banned, detained, imprisoned, and banned again. Facing a possible death penalty he refused to be witness for the state or give undertakings to two supreme court judges who were prepared to negotiate with the National government for his release from prison.

I saw Eddie Daniels speak at the University of Massachusetts years ago and have been meaning to read his story ever since. It was a very honest account of a very interesting life. There are no big words, no showmanship and sometimes the language lacks what a career writer might have added, but people who live through experiences like Robin Island and the Apartheid and have the nerve and the will to write about it and share it with the world should be commended and their stories should be taken not just as works of literature but as patches of history. It was fascinating and entertaining, a story that stands on it's remarkable truth and doesn't need to be dressed up.
