They Raced to Win. A History of Racing in South Africa, 1797-1979, by Jean Jaffee. Published by C. Struik (Pty) Ltd, 1980, Cape Town.

Foreword by Allen M. Snijman, Chairman of the Jockey Club of South Africa. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, engravings, drawings, paintings, portraits, and racing-related ephemera. With Bibliography and Index.

Hardcover with jacket. 217pp. First Edition. Condition: Fair/Fair.

Boards very lightly shelf-rubbed, with light browning of lower edges of the boards. Some edge-wear to head and foot--small chips off outer layer of paper cover; light rubbing to head and heel of spine. Corners lightly rubbed--not bumped, or scuffed. Gilt lettering on front panel and spine crisp, intact. Light foxing to top edge. Endpapers foxed, both front and rear. One or two insignificant specks or small, faint stains in the text block--but free from foxing. Limited highlighting in yellow on seven pages--two paragraphs max (p93). No other inscriptions, annotations or marginalia. Binding secure, no loose or missing pages, no torn pages.

Jacket shelf-worn. Superficially scratched. Spine slightly faded but otherwise jacket is bright and reasonable clean. A couple of short (20mm max) tears into upper and lower edges. Outer coloured layer of wraps chipped away along edges, especially at head and heel of spine. Top edge somewhat scuffed at head of spine and the hinges. Lower edge just rubbed, not scuffed. Fold-mark running down front panel along the fore-edge; front flap creased across top corner. Light foxing of top edge on inside of jacket, with couple of other insignificant, small specks.
