Full leather presentation copy with bright gilt title and decoration on front board. "Presented to the Rt. Hon. Field-Marshal J.C. Smuts and Mrs. Smuts by the authors" written by hand on the half title page, followed by the signatures of the authors and the date Mar 29 1947. The full leather is scuffed at the spine and on the side edge but has been restored. Leather balm has also been applied. Contents clean and binding tight. Slight foxing and rubbing to map on front free endpaper. An interesting illustrated description of South Africa as it stood in 1947 having come out of the war years comparatively well and looking to attract immigration, presented to the country's Prime Minister one year before the fall of Jan Smuts from power and the takeover by the Nationalist government bent on complete apartheid.
